Power to the Penguin!

Power to the Penguin is an energy awareness game in which players use a power-generating hand crank to help the in-game penguin physically power common household objects. By causing the player to under the differential between different outputs, we hoped to give them a sense of scale and proportion for their own energy use. The game was installed in Berkeley’s CITRIS Institute’s showroom from 2010-2012. A gameplay video is available here, and a rendering of a play through is available on Laura Kaltman’s site here. Below are some images of the game’s screens and physical construction.
